Long-term reserve columns fail when every inconvenience becomes an emergency. During sessions we ask clients to ink a trigger sentence under the reserve target. If the day’s problem does not match the sentence, the cash stays.
Triggers that belong on the board
- Sudden loss of primary income lasting more than two pay cycles
- Unplanned hospital stay with out-of-pocket fees
- Urgent home repair that makes the flat unsafe
- Supporting a dependent after an acute event you both named in advance
Triggers that usually do not
- Sale weekends
- Friend group dinners
- Replacing a phone that still works
- Topping up a travel wallet that was underfunded on purpose
Writing the distinction feels blunt. Clients who keep it report fewer midnight raids. Those who skip it often return for a review with an empty “emergency” column and a full shopping history.
An offline wallet tracker only protects reserves if the board says when protection applies. We can help you phrase the sentence during board setup; you still have to obey it when the board is alone on your wall.
